A Tennessee Squire
My wife makes fun of me because I was actually excited about this, and I am hereby seeking to set her straight once and for all and on the record. While I do tend to enjoy a few beers pretty much every weekend, one drink has become a steady companion to my social embibing ever since I became a member of the world famous German Air Force MiG29 squadron. Spending time with my fellow aviators, I was soon introduced to the wonders of good old Jack & Coke. I cannot stand whiskey, even the expensive ones, but, in the right mix I was quite partial to this newly discovered past time.
We called it “Hauswein” which is an analogy to the standard wine of any small restaurant that has picked its favorite. And this was ours. We even had a party patch made with official permission from Lynchburg, TN. As seen on the right. A “black” bottle hung on the wall for free consumption (as long as the beer light was on). The content was not visible, and if the jigger failed to fill up all the way after getting a double shot, you owed the squadron the next bottle. That was 7 years ago. Since that time I have always savoured Jack & Coke at squadron functions, parties, TDY’s and also at home. Now to my actual point. A good friend and fellow pilot from Cannon AFB introduced me to the Tennesse Squires, and select group of “land owners” in Tennesse who “own” 1 square inch of land on the Lynchburg Distillery. It is purely for fun and/or prestige and you cannot buy in. A fellow squire has to nominate you and, if selected, you get to join. This happened to me on Christmas Eve last year when my “Deed” arrived by mail. Even though the whole thing is just for fun, I was still honored to become a member which is a constant source of amusement for my wife. The deed now hangs in my humble bar that I designed when my home was built. I’ve never been a collector of anything (excpet briefly stamps when I was a kid…
maybe I shouldn’t have outed myself..) but I can see myself starting to look for Jack Daniels merchendise to complement my humble collection thus far. I look forward to hosting friends and collegues in the near future if they take me up on the offer to visit…
I actually have one of those patches (acquired as a shifty LT while at Nellis) from one of you buds. I think we talked about that once before. Pretty cool idea.
February 21st, 2007 at 04:48I envy you sir. I have been in search of my own deed for quite some time. Served overseas with a gentleman from TN that said he would nominate me, but nothing ever came of it. I raise my own Jack & Coke and offer a cheers to you sir in hope that one day I might say that as a fellow Squire. Until then…let’s all keep enjoying the great beverage known as Jack.
